Catherine Addai-Boadu's pieces have been stylishly worn by film director Ava DuVernay and actress Teyonah Parris. Inspired by the styles of Chanel, Jewel by Lisa, Franca Sozzani, Stella Jean, Iris Apfel, Mrs. Michelle Obama and Tracee Elli Ross, Catherine describes her Kaela Kay brand as 'modern, classy and chic with a modern flare.' See what else she had to say below!
What inspired you to pursue a career as a fashion designer?
I wanted to bring the beauty of African culture to fashion through the fabrics - but in a modern fashion sense. I wanted to create a brand that women would be excited to wear and feel exclusive to own. I wanted to create pieces that stand out in a crowed and start a conversation. Modern, classy and chic with a modern flare.
What do you love most about your profession?
Meeting customers and hearing their personal stories with Kaela Kay clothing. I love to hear women say they felt regal and beautiful in their Kaela Kay garment.
What advice do you have for other aspiring fashion designers?
Stay true to your brand. Don't be swayed by what others are doing and don't be bogged down by fast fashion trends. Always remember your clientele and pay homage to your aesthetic. It may take time for your talent to be discovered; but get out, go to events, network and be bold enough to put yourself out there. It always works out. ENJOY YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS!

My fave movie is Gladiator and I will eat plantain ANY which way (fried, boiled, mashed - yum!)
