Afrikadey! – a word that comes from the broken English spoken in West Africa, which means “Africa is Alive, Africa is Well, Africa is There”. For a week each summer in Calgary, Afrikadey! Festival also celebrates the music, food, dance, theatre, film, literature and visual arts of Africa.
This year, Kuwala attended the Afrikadey! Festival. Hosted on the beautiful urban park of downtown Calgary called Prince's Island Park, the day was filled with soulful music, hearty food and various arts and fashion stalls. The musical acts included amongst others, the two-time Grammy award winning band, Arrested Development, most famous for their single 'everyday people'; The soulful Zimbabwean band Mokoomba and the vibrant and energetic Kárà Kátà Afrobeat Group.
We also couldn't help but notice the stylish African inspired fashion of the day. From ankara dresses by Stella Jean to Sudanese bridal wear and everything in between, here's some of what we spotted:
